Over the October Half Term 2021, a group of local Islington teenagers, aged 14-16, took part in a pilot project looking to explore themes of bravado amongst young people growing up in the inner city. A collaboration between Head Held High, Little Angel Theatre and Oliver Hymans, this pilot project funded by Arts Council England was looking to place young people at the heart of the theatre-making process and to explore how puppets could be used to tell this story. Working with a motivational life coach, professional theatre-makers and life-sized puppets, the young people got to input their ideas and experiences into devising a brand new performance with the aim of inspiring other young people to realise their potential, live their best lives, and bring about positive change in their community. During one week of creative workshops, the young participants worked alongside a team of professionals and other young people to develop the content for the scratch performance, part of which is documented here. The project was successful in allowing the young people to take ownership of their lives, build leadership skills, confidence, and to enhance their experience in creating artistic work.
